When your request involves an engine, or engine overhaul kit, we need to know identification "marks" off  the engine. We will use the term "marks" because it’s not always just numbers that you will be looking for. Because there are so many types and brands of engines, we’ve documented some of the more common areas on the engines where manufacturers' identification marks can be located and what method may have been used to place them there.
In addition to the identification marks, which will help you determine what brand and type of engine you have; you need to note how many cylinders (3, 4, 6 (V-6 or in-line 6), 8 or more) and whether your engine is fueled by gasoline, LP gas or diesel. You may need to visually verify external physical differences such as: "Is the oil pan 6" deep or 4-1/2" deep?", "Is the thermostat mounting round or rectangular?", "Does the oil filter screw directly onto the engine block or does it screw onto an adapter?".
