What is the leading cause of engine failure?
The leading cause of engine failure is dust or dirt drawn into the engine through the intake system. It takes only 1/4 teaspoon of dust intake per hour in one eight-hour shift to cause cylinder and piston ring damage severe enough to produce engine failure. There are major entry points of contamination. Intake hoses that are in poor condition, cracked or clamped improperly, are major sources of contamination entry. You might also want to check the fit between the housing and filter element itself. It is critical that precautions against dust are take when installing an engine. No engine, including a new one, is immune from the harm that dust can cause. It is especially wise to be diligent against dust contamination because carelessness will void your warranty.
